Step into a career in social care

If you’re unemployed, you may be able to join a short training course to get an interview, job or apprenticeship in social care.

Sector-based Work Academy Programme (SWAP)

The Sector-based Work Academy Programme (SWAP) is delivered by The Sheffield College. This 4 week training course with a 1-2 day placement in social care has a guaranteed job interview for those who finish the course.

Course content

The training course covers: 

  • Level 2 Introduction to Health and Social Care
  • First Aid awareness, Dementia Awareness
  • Infection Control
  • Moving and Handling
  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
  • Safeguarding and Dignity
  • Challenging Behaviour

The course was designed in collaboration with Skills for Care.

Criteria for entry

To take part in SWAP, you must:

  • be aged 19 and over
  • live in South Yorkshire (with the right to work in the UK)
  • be in receipt of a benefit (due to unemployment, being employed part-time, or on a low wage)
  • have a good grasp of English (including the ability to write)
  • have a genuine interest in working in care

No previous experience or qualifications required.

Sector Routeways

The Adult Social Care Sector Routeways programme provides a 10-day industry specific training course focused on enhancing employability. The programme helps prepare participants to secure meaningful paid employment with local employers in the adult social care Sector.

Course content

The training course covers: 

  • Sector Introduction
  • Roles and Responsibilities
  • Values and Principles
  • Skills and Attributes in the Sector
  • Moving and Handling
  • Technology in Care
  • Employability Skills
  • Jobs in Sheffield

Once you have completed the training, you can attend a work placement for up to 2 weeks with a local employer to provide practical experience and give you the opportunity to show that you are ready to work.

Criteria for entry

To take part in Sector Routeways, you must:

  • aged 16 and over
  • live in South Yorkshire (with the right to work in the UK)
  • be unemployed or NEET (not in employment, education or training)
  • be job-ready including having the right behaviours and attitudes for the workplace
  • have a genuine interest in working in care

No previous experience or qualifications required.

Experience and qualifications

No previous experience or qualifications are required for either course.

DBS checks

Enhanced DBS checks are provided free of charge for learners.

You will need to be able to provide a passport, driving licence or original birth certificate for an enhanced DBS check.
