Celebrating social care
April is #CelebratingSocialCare month, an opportunity to showcase our amazing Sheffield care sector.
In Sheffield, we have had an amazing year!
In October 2024, we launched Sheffield Cares – Sheffield’s Care Academy with a mission to retain, recruit and develop a strong workforce that delivers outstanding care for the people of Sheffield.
In February 2025, Sheffield Cares, Sheffield Hallam University, Tomato Energy, The Centre for Care at the University of Sheffield and Community Youth Services hosted the Sheffield Cares Excellence Awards to say a massive “Thank you” to individuals who do an amazing job offering care and support to the citizens of Sheffield to live a life they want to live. This includes our 17,500 strong care workforce, our 11,000 unpaid carers and our 7,000 young carers.

Sheffield Cares Excellence Awards 2025
We received nearly 200 nominations about our amazing carers in Sheffield. To give a flavour of their dedication and brilliance, here are a few quotes of the fantastic nominations we received:
“I would clone her in a heartbeat if I could! She is an inspiration to her colleagues and the people she supports….motivated, proactive and always thinking about how things can be better” GM nominated by her Manager.
“Sue never falters; She is a strong woman who supports with compassion, with kindness and with love….Thankyou for everything that you do!” Sue, foster carer and Shared Lives carer
“Without Matthew’s support, I don’t know where I would be today. His care and support allow me to have a break and spend time with each of my children” Matthew, unpaid carer.
It was a wonderful night, held at Sheffield City Hall, attended by almost 300 people including the Lord Mayor Jayne Dunn. Our nominees and winners were entertained by our compere Big Ian Donaghy and danced the night away with DJ set from Under the Stars, a Sheffield based arts and events charity for adults with learning disabilities and/or autism.
One award winner said ““Thank you all for the most amazing evening – touching, heart breaking, reaffirming, all round wonderful evening of realisation, hope, promise and gratitude for services. Delighted to be acknowledged in the voluntary sector, bringing my daughter to join in the celebrations! Grateful and blown away”
Alexis Chappell, Director of Adult Social care at Sheffield City Council said ““It was a hugely fantastic event and a great foundation for the future. Personally, it was a dream come true and I want to thank you for that.”
