Celebrating International Nurses Day

International Nurses' Day 2025 is on Monday 12 May. It's an opportunity to celebrate the incredible skill, dedication and impact of nursing for those working in NHS and Social Care.

We want to celebrate those nurses whose skill and expertise is used in our nursing and care homes across the city, enhancing the lives of Sheffield citizens.

This year’s theme focusses on the health and wellbeing of nurses. It highlights the critical role a healthy nursing workforce plays in strengthening economies, improving health and social care systems. This ensures better outcomes for communities worldwide.

History

International Nurses day is celebrated around the world on 12 May every year.  This is the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. In 2025, this would make Florence Nightingale 205 years old.

We want to spotlight the nurses working in Adult Social Care services across our city. Nurses working across care homes, community nursing services, social care agencies and nursing homes give an invaluable service and offer care and support to individuals with varying needs. Social care nurses focus on supporting individuals to maintain their independence and quality of life. They bring expert skills and knowledge to meeting their health and social care needs.

Social care in nursing

Nurses in social care have distinct expertise. They use their clinical skills to understand the variety of needs of people and adopt a person-centred individualised approach. They recognise the importance of giving everyone a sense of independence that enables them to live a life they wish with security, purpose, and significance.

At Sheffield Cares, we want to say a big Thank You! to our amazing nurses providing care and support to the citizens of Sheffield to live a life they want to live.
